5 Amazing Scottish Oak Logs

sam huge and old scottish oak in the forest

I bought these logs from an old estate in Scotland. I was there when the loggers took these huge oak trees down. We quartered all these logs for the figure. It was clear with very tight flake figure.

SCOTTISH OAK LOG #1818

One of 5 amazing white oak logs I bought from an old estate in Scotland. I had them buck it up. It was 10′ long and 46″ in diameter at the small end. It was clear with very tight flake figure similar to the comb figure in the log I sold to the Martin Guitar Co. for their limited edition Arts & Crafts style acoustical Guitar. There were only one hundred made. There is a photograph of this guitar on our INSTRUMENT WOODS PAGE When this lumber is dried we will be culling out the best figured instrument grade lumber and offering it for sale.

SCOTTISH OAK LOG #1819

This is one of the 5 huge Oak logs off the old Estate in Scotland. It was 14′ long and 56″ diameter at the small end. It produced quartersawn 5/4 & 8/4 boards up to 26″ wide. This log was so big we could only get one other 8′ log #1821 with it on a tri-axel log truck and it was over weight. We could barely get it off the truck using two machines.

SCOTTISH BROWN OAK LOG #1820

This is the largest brown oak log I have ever seen and was 260 years old, one of the 5 from the old Estate in Scotland. It was 10′ long and 51″ in diameter at the small end. Amazingly it is a Brown Oak and has very nice medium brown color through out. Some of the boards were striped and when bookmatched, give a striking look. The log had ring shake in the middle third of the log but still yielded 18″ wide clear quartered boards. It was cut into quartered 5/4 and 8/4 lumber with very big flake figure and some very good comb figure which is my favorite figure in a good oak log.

SCOTTISH OAK LOG #1821

Another log from the old Estate in Scotland. It was 8′ long and 49″ in diameter at the small end. We quartered it into 5/4 lumber. It had very good flake figure and was curly from one end to the other and all the way into the heart. It yielded clear boards up to 20″ wide. Of course all the lumber is bookmatched as all the logs we cut would be.

This Log was also from this old Estate. It is 2′ to 3′ in diameter and 14′ long. It was sawn into 10/4 flitches and will make very beautiful and unusual table tops. All the flitches have cats paw type burl through out each flitch. It is on sticks now air drying and will be available when dried.
